Research practice
One of the important components for the development of a student as a future professional is the practical application of knowledge obtained during university studies. Therefore, the choice of a place for internship is a very powerful tool for improving the skills of an individual as a specialist.
The Department of Sociology of the Faculty of Sociology and Law takes care of providing its students with a wide choice of organizations for internships. The Department organizes internships with its own resources, which are a springboard for obtaining the necessary skills and enrolling in internships.
Among the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute’s own divisions:
World Data Center for Geoinformatics and Sustainable Development (WDC-Ukraine)
It has been operating in Ukraine since 2006, is part of the World Data System of the International Science Council and unites specialists from various fields of expertise to organize and conduct interdisciplinary research, educational activities aimed at overcoming global problems of humanity; developing a single information space for the purpose of effective management of data important for the tasks of science, education, technology and decision-making.
The Center operates on the basis of the National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”. To support the initiatives of the International Science Council in conducting applied and fundamental research in Ukraine, the Center also has the status of a public organization (NGO).
WDC-Ukraine includes a number of scientific units:
Information and Analytical Situational Center;
Supercomputer Computing Center;
Laboratory of Computer Modeling and Intelligent Data Analysis;
Laboratory of Geographic Information Systems;
Laboratory of Big Data Analysis in Cyber-Physical Systems;
Laboratory of Econometrics and Forecasting;
Laboratory of Environmental Sustainability Monitoring;
Laboratory of World Economy, Regional Studies and Microeconomics.
First of all, the work of the Center is focused on ensuring the full cycle of data processing (collection, quality control, storage, analysis and interpretation) and providing access to them to the scientific community through global information resources. For this purpose, an appropriate infrastructure of hardware and software tools has been created and maintained, including URAN, GEANT2 data transmission networks; NGI distributed computing environment, including its own computing cluster WDC-Ukraine 7TFps; data storage systems, data processing and analysis servers. Relational (Oracle, PostgreSQL), graph (OrientDB), NoSQL document-oriented (MongoDB, Berkeley DB), Bigtable-like (Apache Cassandra) and other DBMSs are used for data storage. When conducting data analysis, both well-known methods of Data Mining, Text Mining, Machine Learning, and their modifications developed by the Center’s specialists are used. Processing and analysis of large volumes of data (Big Data) are carried out using technologies and tools of the Hadoop environment, R, JS, Java, Python languages. Separate data sets are placed in open access on the WDC-Ukraine resources.
One of the main areas of work of WDC-Ukraine is the development of models, methods and tools for assessing the state and modeling the behavior of complex systems of various nature in order to optimize their functioning, ensure the decision-making process, etc.
Educational and Scientific Center of Applied Sociology “Socioplus”
- the student can try himself as an employee of the Data Processing and Input Department, using Ukrainian data entry technologies to learn both the technical and organizational aspects of this stage of the research;
- the opportunity is also offered to develop organizational skills, the ability to work with both the project customer and its performers, to track the process of conducting a sociological study from beginning to end;
- the student can investigate conflicts and find ways to overcome them using meditative methods;
- it is worth noting that the student can gain experience in both quantitative and qualitative research, the ability to process the information received.
In addition to its own resources, the Department of Sociology of the Faculty of Sociology and Law has close ties for internships in other institutions and organizations.

Reporting on the completion of research practice:
On March 31, an online meeting was held to defend reports on the completion of research practice of students of the SL-31mn group at the World Data Center for Geoinformatics and Sustainable Development (WDC-Ukraine).
The meeting also discussed the stages of preparation for the defense of master’s theses with the scientific supervisors and guarantor of the ONP “Social Data Analytics”.
